Cargill’s Canadian wing plans to sell its grain elevator at Unity in northwestern Saskatchewan to an area farm operation for an undisclosed sum.

Cargill Ltd., headquartered in Winnipeg, said Monday that the sale agreement with GL Southgate Farms includes grain marketing support and crop inputs sales and services for area producers.

Specifically, Cargill said its current Unity staff will still source grain from farmers in Unity and area for delivery to three nearby Cargill grain facilities: North Battleford and Kindersley, Sask., and Vermilion, Alta. (about 200 km northwest of Unity).

Field-by-field mapping could improve yield, productivity predictions

University of Saskatchewan researchers are using field border mapping to collect data on field variability, including problematic weeds, and to predict things like yields.

Cargill will also keep its crop input assets at Unity, including a crop protection warehouse, a liquid-fertilizer tank farm, and a dry-fertilizer blending facility.

Cargill also has off-farm grain storage capabilities with Prairie Malt at Biggar, Sask., and with Horizon Milling at Saskatoon.

“The decision to sell our Unity grain elevator was not easy and is in no way a reflection of the great work provided by our professional staff over the years,” said Bert Benoit, Cargill’s Twin Rivers farm service group manager, in the company’s release Monday.

“However, through our realigned network, we will continue to provide distinctive grain marketing and crop input services that farmers have grown to value and trust.”

Cargill said its facility manager at Unity, Tracy David, will continue to manage the crop input business in Unity along with local staff, including Sara Yuzak, the company’s local farm marketing rep.

The sale of the Unity elevator is expected to be completed in early September.
