The Calgary Farmers’ Market tentatively has a new home to go to before the extension runs out on its current lease late next year.
The CFM, a new generation co-op operating the largest farmers’ market in the city, has applied for a development permit to move to Blackfoot Centre at 510 77th Ave. SE.
“We are excited about the move and think it is a great opportunity for the market and for the community,” CFM board president Rodney Bradshaw said in a release Thursday. “However, we understand there is a process, and that the city will need to approve the relocation.”

There’s now a formal leasing agreement in place between CFM and Strategic Group, its new landlord, but the proposed move is subject to the City of Calgary’s development approval process.
Blackfoot Centre is in Burns Industrial Park in the city’s southeast, near the corner of 77th Avenue and Fifth Street SE.
The market, which bills itself as one of the city’s favourite year-round gathering places, hosts about 100 vendors offering farm produce, meat, seafood, dairy, baking, prepared foods and other “unique and artisan” products.
The CFM has operated at the Currie Barracks in the city’s southwest for the past six years, but its landlord, Canada Lands, plans to redevelop the site and had planned not to renew the market’s lease there. But the company last October granted the co-op an extension to remain at the Currie Barracks until Nov. 30, 2010.
“The Calgary Farmers’ Market is not closing,” CFM said in a statement last October. “With the help of (Canada Lands) we will make an organized and smooth transition.”
