Monsanto names 16 Manitoba scholars

Each student takes $1,500 into first 
post-secondary year

Sixteen Manitobans are among 66 high school graduates set to get $1,500 each from Monsanto for their first year of agricultural schooling.

Monsanto Canada on Sept. 23 announced the 66 winners of its 2015 Monsanto Fund Opportunity Scholarships, out of 135 applicants from across the country.

Manitoba’s recipients for 2015 include Tara Frisch of Manitou, Mackenzie Kozak of Roblin, Hayley Macaulay of Killarney, Christopher Manchur of Gilbert Plains, Carter McKinney of Waskada, Bradley McLeod of Mather, Katie Meggison of Goodlands, Lexus Ostberg of Dominion City, Kathleen Porteous of Marquette, Kantara Robertson of Treherne, Connor Shirtliff of Starbuck, William Sikora of Brandon, Marianne Sytnyk of Oakburn, Lara Teetaert of Deloraine, Kristen Timmerman of Treherne and Rebecca Unrau of Boissevain.

The new digital agriculture fundamentals program has kicked off at Assiniboine College in Brandon.

Winners also included 16 students from Saskatchewan, 12 each from Ontario and Alberta, five from Quebec, two each from Nova Scotia and British Columbia and one from New Brunswick.

Recipients are all enrolled in first-year degree or diploma programs in agriculture or a related field this fall at recognized Canadian schools.

This year’s judges included Robert Adamson of Pembina Trails School Division; Johanne Ross of Agriculture in the Classroom-Manitoba (AITC-M); Kelly Green of the Canadian Canola Growers Association; Crystal Jorgenson of the University of Manitoba; and Brigitte Burgoyne of consulting firm ThinkShift.

Details on the 2016 scholarship program will be released in February, Monsanto said.
