Bothwell Cheese, Dairy Farmers of Manitoba and the Manitoba Bulk Milk Haulers have announced a new program to make monthly cheese donations – valued at $200,000 per year – for the next five years for distribution through Manitoba food banks.
Winnipeg Harvest received its first delivery of 1,500 individually wrapped 650-g pieces of cheddar cheese last week.
It’s a generous donation that helps Winnipeg Harvest enhance its hampers with a healthy food that low-income families usually can’t afford, Winnipeg Harvest executive co-ordinator David Northcott said in a release.

Under the arrangement, Dairy Farmers of Manitoba will donate 120,000 litres of milk per year for processing at Bothwell Cheese for food banks in Manitoba.
The milk donation is over and above the 170,000 litres of milk Manitoba dairy farmers already donate annually for processing and packaging into one-litre cartons of milk for food banks.
Northcott welcomed Bothwell Cheese as another partner in the fight against hunger and nutrient-poor diets in Manitoba.
Winnipeg Harvest provides over 5,000 food hampers a week to families at various food programs including local soup kitchens, shelters, drop-in centres and food banks.
