Today the patriotic will our cenotaphs attend To fulfil the pledge of loyalty: “We will remember them.” “Swords beaten into ploughshares” will be voiced in prayerful tone As strangers stand at monuments chiselled out of stone.

Poppy wreaths and honour guards will grace historic sites And a scant two-minute silence will officially suffice, But daily in a parent’s soul comes sorrow, bare and stark, For memories of departed ones are etched upon the heart.
