A Manitoba-bred draft mare emerged the winner of the Keystone Draft Futurity held Sept. 17 in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Elkview Tammy, owned by Kendall Strawn and Deb Taylor and bred by Gordon and Ross Joseph of Virden won the top prize of just over $3,900, a release from the North American Equine Ranchers Information Council says. Any foal purchased from the Keystone Colt Sale held in conjunction with the futurity, and paid into the futurity at the time of sale, is eligible to return to compete in the Keystone Draft Horse Futurity as a two-year-old, and to compete for the total futurity purse. The young horses compete in halter, rail and pattern classes.

To date, equine ranchers from Manitoba and Saskatchewan have consigned foals to this sale held in Meadville, PA. The total purse consists of nomination fees paid by the consigning breeders as well as NAERIC, along with the futurity fees paid by the colt buyers at the time of the sale.
The high-selling foal of the sale of this year’s offspring was a Belgian colt, Creek Side Victory, consigned by Tom Lane of Birtle, Manitoba, and purchased by Samuel A. King of Lititz, PA for US$6,000. There were 47 lots sold for an average of $1,105.
