Global Markets: Crude oil climbs as Mideast conflict escalates

  • The escalating conflict in the Middle East sent crude oil values climbing higher, while the resulting threat of inflation weighed heavily on world equities. Agricultural futures were mostly higher.
  • Iran named Mojtaba Khamenei as its new Supreme Leader, succeeding his late father, Ali Khamenei. The new leader has been described as a hard liner.
  • Brazil’s 2025-26 soybean harvest has hit the halfway mark said consultancy AgRural in its latest update. However, the pace was 10 points behind was off the fields by the same time a year ago and the slowest pace since 2020-21.
  • Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called byelections for two ridings in Ontario and one in Quebec. The votes will be held April 13. The Liberals are currently three seats short of the 172 needed for a majority government.
