     – United States President Donald Trump delivered a lengthy State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday evening. Trump highlighted what he considered to be his domestic accomplishments over the past year and announced plans for the country’s 250th birthday celebrations later this year. However, he also blamed Democrats for allowing “millions and millions” of people to enter the country illegally. Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger delivered the Democratic Party’s rebuttal after Trump’s address, saying, “He tries to divide us. He tries to enrage us, to pit us against one another, neighbour against neighbour.”

     – U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told Fox News on Wednesday morning that U.S. and Canadian trade officials have met today and will meet again in the coming weeks. After the State of the Union, Greer told CBC News that tariffs will be a part of any new trade deal Canada makes with the Trump administration. Greer also said he wants Canada to give the U.S. “fair access to its dairy markets”, as well as put U.S. wines and spirits back on store shelves in certain provinces. The Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which was enacted in 2018 during Trump’s first term, is up for renewal this year, but the U.S. has shown little interest in keeping it in effect.

     – At least 30 people have died, while 39 others were missing after heavy rains caused mudslides in Brazil’s southeastern state of Minas Gerais on Tuesday. Approximately 440 people were displaced by the floods and landslides in the city of Juiz de Fora. City officials said it has been the rainiest February on record, with more than double the typical amount of rainfall this month. Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology on Tuesday issued heavy rain alerts for parts of 14 states, including the entire areas of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.
