Global Markets: Violence in Mexico leaves Canadians stranded

     – At least 25 members of Mexico’s National Guard were killed on Sunday in response to the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes or “El Mencho”, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation cartel, who was killed in a military raid earlier in the day. Shelter-in-place orders were put into effect in the Mexican states of Jalisco and Nayarit and Global Affairs Canada warned Canadians in the country to avoid non-essential travel within Mexico, warning that the situation could “deteriorate rapidly”. Numerous airlines have also postponed or cancelled flights.

     – United States President Donald Trump said on Saturday he would raise a temporary tariff on goods from all other countries of 10 per cent to 15 per cent. The planned surcharge was in response to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that Trump overstepped his authority when issuing universal tariffs last year. Trump said he would issue new ones through other powers, but lacked details.

     – A 21-year-old man from North Carolina was shot and killed after breaching the perimeter of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Sunday. Austin Tucker Martin entered the property through the north gate as someone else was leaving. He was then approached by two Secret Service agents and a sheriff’s deputy from the Palm Beach County Police Department. Martin was carrying a gas can and a shotgun. His family said Martin didn’t know how to use a gun and that they were Trump supporters.

     – Thousands of flights were cancelled in northeastern parts of the U.S. on Monday while those in the area were subject to travel bans and blizzard warnings. Areas of Long Island and New Jersey received up to 50 centimetres of snow since Sunday. Blizzard warnings were issued from Maine to Maryland. Most of Nova Scotia will get between 15 to 40 cm of snow by Tuesday.
