Global Markets: Record large crops for canola, wheat: StatCan

Glacier FarmMedia – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

     – Statistics Canada reported record large crops for canola and all wheat in its principal field crop estimates released on Thursday. Canola production for 2025-26 was pegged at 21.80 million tonnes, about 1.77 million more than the September estimate and nearly 2.56 million above last year’s level. All wheat production was projected at 39.95 million tonnes, 3.33 million above the September estimate and four million more than the 2024-25 total. StatCan raised its estimates for most crops including barley, lentils, oats and peas, while trimming those for corn and soybeans.

     – Canada’s Food Price Report, released on Wednesday and conducted by researchers from Dalhousie University in Halifax, said food prices in Canada could increase by four to six per cent next year. Beef prices could rise by seven per cent in 2026. Chicken and canned goods may also see price increases. The average family of four is expected to spend C$17,571.79 on food in 2026, an increase of up to C$994.63 from last year.    

     – Politico reported on Thursday that United States President Donald Trump could decide next year to withdraw from the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told Politico he spoke with Trump about negotiating with Canada and Mexico separately and dividing the agreement in two parts. “The president’s view is he only wants deals that are a good deal,” Greer added.

     – Three of Canada’s biggest banks reported multi-billion dollar profits in the fourth quarter on Thursday. CIBC announced it will raise its dividend after reporting a Q4 profit of C$2.18 billion, with BMO Financial Group doing the same after a C$2.30 billion profit. TD Bank Group had the largest Q4 profit of the three at C$3.2 billion.
