Global Markets: Brazil’s Bolsonaro to serve 27 years

  • Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has begun serving a 27-year prison term after the country’s top court formally concluded the case against the far-right leader. Bolsonaro was convicted for his role in a coup plot against his successor. Bolsonaro had been under house arrest from a separate case but was detained since Saturday after tampering with his ankle monitor.
  • Farm cash receipts in Canada totalled C$73.7 billion during the first three quarters of 2025, reported Statistics Canada on Wednesday. That was up 2.9 per cent from the same period the previous year. Livestock receipts were up 12.9 per cent at C$32.9 billion, but crop receipts and program payments were down by 2.6 per cent and 16.7 per cent respectively. Lower canola and special crop prices contributed to C$992.5 million drop in crop receipts, said StatCan.

  • Phase one of the Gaza ceasefire is nearing its end, with Israel handing over the remains of 15 Palestinians on Wednesday. Hamas returned the body of an Israeli hostage the previous day, with the remains of two hostages still believed to be in Gaza. Hamas said it was determined to withhold the agreement and return them both. The second phase of the ceasefire will include creating an international body to govern the embattled territory and oversee reconstruction. An armed International Stability Force will also be deployed.
