Bayer to acquire HyTech canola facility

Glacier FarmMedia | MarketsFarm – Bayer CropScience Inc. announced on Oct. 3 it will acquire a HyTech Production Ltd. canola treating and packaging facility near Coaldale, Alta. on Nov. 1.

Ownership of the facility will transfer from HyTech to Bayer and HyTech employees at the plant will work under Bayer. Meanwhile, HyTech will retain its other assets and full hybrid seed production capabilities. Bayer will also use HyTech tollers at the facility.

Bayer already has a canola seed production site in Cranbrook, B.C. and a seed cleaning facility in Lethbridge, Alta.

Sunday marked “Food Freedom Day,” the date by which the average Canadian household earned enough money to cover its annual grocery bill as per calculations from the Canadian Federation of Agriculture.

“With an expected increase in canola volume, the facility is perfectly located and designed to support Bayer’s Canola business today as well as enable future growth,” said Antoine Bernet, president and CEO of Bayer CropScience Inc.

“By optimizing our canola production process, Bayer can enhance service and supply of canola hybrids for customers. We’ll have more visibility and control over the seed from production to packaging, which directly benefits the farmers who use our seed.”
