Koch Brandon nitrogen plant earns efficiency rating

Koch Fertilizer Canada’s Brandon plant has earned a 2021 Energy Star for Industry certification from Natural Resources Canada.

It’s the first fertilizer plant in Canada to receive the rating, which signifies the facility “…performs in the top quartile of similar facilities in Canada and the United States for energy efficiency,” the company said in a media release.

Plant manager Gordon Herron said the company was pleased to receive the certification.

“Energy efficiency is a key priority of our environmental stewardship framework,” he said. “Every day, our team works to enhance plant operations and adopt innovative technologies to reduce our energy consumption and responsibly manage our resources.”

To earn certification, fertilizer plants enter key plant operating data and annual energy data into industry-specific energy management tools that benchmark a plant’s energy performance against the industry.

The certification indicates the fertilizer plant uses energy more efficiently than 75 percent of similar nitrogenous plants in the U.S. and Canada. This means the Koch Fertilizer Canada Brandon plant spends less on energy and has lower energy-related environmental impacts than similar plants.

Additionally, all plants awarded certification must be energy performance verified and in good standing with federal environmental laws.

In addition to Brandon, Koch Fertilizer has three Energy Star certified nitrogen plants in the U.S.
