Feed Grains: Survey shows U.S. corn crop bigger than USDA reports

Winnipeg, Jan. 5 (CNS) – Following are a few highlights in
the Canadian and world feed grains markets for Friday, Jan. 5.

According to a survey by Farm Futures, American farmers
harvested more corn than previous estimates from the United
States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In the survey farmers
said they harvested 14.663 billion bushels of corn in 2017, down
485 million from 2016, but 85 million more than the USDA
reported in November. The survey found farmers harvested around
100,000 more acres than the government said, with yields hitting

around three-quarters of a bushel higher for a record 176.2
bushels per acre. The USDA releases its latest production report
next Friday.

Researchers in Australia have developed a faster way to
test rust on wheat crops, according to a report in the North
Queensland Register. The test only takes a few hours compared to
several weeks and greatly improving the crops chances of being
reduced by rust.

Feed barley prices in Western Canada are holding steady,
according to the latest information from the Prairie Ag Hotwire.
Saskatchewan feed barley is sitting at C$3.85 per bushel. In
Manitoba feed barley is at C$3.75 per bushel and in Alberta at
C$4.79 per bushel.

Feed wheat prices as well are holding steady according to

the Prairie Ag Hotwire. In Saskatchewan feed wheat is at C$4.90
per bushel and in Alberta at C$6.10 per bushel.
