WINNIPEG, April 12 (CNS) – Maple Leaf Foods saw its stock
rise 4.63 per cent on Thursday, just one day after it awarded
funding to an Ontario-based company that wants to expand
production of insect-based foods. Entomo Farms produces whole
roasted crickets and mealworms as alternatives to meat. The
company says it plans to use the funding to expand production of
its products, which are used in everything from protein bars to
pasta sauces.
The Canadian dollar settled on Thursday at US$0.7939 cents
or C$1.2596, compared to Tuesday’s North American close of
US$0.7947 or C$1.2584.
The loonie took strength from gains in crude oil while
heavy losses in gold were bearish for the currency.
The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 11.37 points, or 0.07%, to
15,269.27. The market was bolstered by gains in the healthcare
sector.

Canada’s agricultural sector performed as follows:

Maple Leaf Foods————-up $ 1.43 at $ 32.31
