Global Markets: Housing starts down in December

WINNIPEG, Jan. 9, 2018 (CNS) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.
Unionized workers at the General Motors assembly plant in Oshawa, Ont. are holding a work stoppage Wednesday morning after GM has confirmed it is closing the plant. Unifor president Jerry Dias sat down with GM Tuesday to talk about proposals the union had made to extend the life of the plant. GM instead said the union should work with the company on timing and transition plans for the close to 3,000 affected workers.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. released new data Wednesday morning stating that the annual pace of housing starts fell in December. The seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts in Canada was 213,419 units in December, down from 224,349 in November.
United States President Donald Trump demanded U.S. Congress provide billions more to combat illegal migration in a prime-time address Tuesday night, which aired on all major U.S. television networks. He stopped short of declaring a national emergency and offered no new path to end the political dispute over his proposed wall on the Mexican border which has caused a partial government shutdown.
