Global Markets: False North Korean missile alarm in Japan

WINNIPEG, Jan. 16 (CNS Canada) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– A false alarm about a North Korean missile launch was sent out by Japanese public broadcaster NHK on Tuesday. The mistake comes only a few days after a similar issue in Hawaii.

– Many major world cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, dropped sharply on Tuesday as they were hit by a broad-based selloff.

– Roughly one-third of Canadians surveyed by the MNP Debt Index said they are unable to cover their monthly expenses, causing debt levels to rise. That’s up from 25 per cent three months earlier. Roughly half of respondents said they were within C$200 of not being able to pay their monthly bills.
