N.B. puts up $210K for local food marketing

New Brunswick’s Agri-Food Market Development Program has pledged $210,000 to help farmers and agribusinesses market the province’s food production locally.

“This program offers our agri-food producers additional tools to market and promote the quality products they grow and produce here in New Brunswick,” Agriculture Minister Ronald Ouellette said in a release Friday.

The larger program is meant to provide cost-shared assistance to farmers, farmers’ markets, associations and agri-food businesses to “help improve the sale and consumption of local agri-food products through marketing initiatives such as road signage, promotion activities, agri-tourism, developing and launching new products, and establishing marketing groups.”

To date, 148 projects have benefited from over $1 million in funding from the program, which is now in its third year, the province said Friday.

“Increasing the sale and consumption of New Brunswick agri-food products within the province will help the industry be an important player in government’s objective of achieving self-sufficiency,” Ouellette said.

“New Brunswick farmers are a hard-working and diverse group who often are in the best position to know what is required to promote their high-quality, New Brunswick agri-food products,” he said in the release. “This program provides assistance for them to make those choices.”
