Manitoba’s Team Jennifer Jones has signed on for a two-year extension of its sponsorship by Monsanto Canada, through to the end of April 2010.

The extension, announced Monday, includes an undisclosed amount of monetary support and “performance incentives” for the curling team as well as title sponsorship, company logo placement on both on-ice and off-ice team clothing and promotional appearances for Monsanto by team members on through the 2009-10 competitive season.

The Jones rink in 2008 won Manitoba provincial, national and world women’s championships, plus a number of first place finishes on the World Curling Tour, the company said. The rink has already qualified for the 2009 pre-Olympic curling trials.

Soy trading firms to abandon Amazon protection pact in Brazil

Some of the world’s largest soybean traders are preparing to break their agreement to curb deforestation of the Amazon rainforest to preserve tax benefits in Brazil’s top farm state, two people with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

“After a season like the team had last year we can’t envision anything better in terms of profile and achievement,” said Trish Jordan, public affairs director for the Winnipeg-based Canadian arm of the U.S. seed and chemical company, in a release Monday.

“Our relationship with the team and their connection to our farm customers and employees is tremendous. We are thrilled to be with them right through their quest for Olympic gold.”

The team consists of skip Jennifer Jones, third Cathy Overton-Clapham, second Jill Officer, lead Dawn Askin, Jennifer Clark-Rouire (who joined the team midway through last season) and coach Janet Arnott.

“Corporate support from a title sponsor such as Monsanto is critical to make our dream a reality,” Jones said in the company’s release. “The people at Monsanto have been incredibly supportive of both our team and the sport of curling in Canada.”

Monsanto Canada’s other curling sponsorships include the 2008 Continental Cup, the 2009 Manitoba provincial women’s curling championship, the 2009 Tim Hortons Canadian curling trials and pre-trials qualifier, the 2009 and 2010 Tim Hortons Brier and the 2009 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
