Don’t throw those tired, old sweaters or other wool garments away. Instead, turn them into warm mittens. For years I’ve been making mitts from fleece, and while they are fluffy and warm looking, they really are not that warm. Boiled wool has the reputation of being one of the warmest fabrics you can find. All you have to do is put the garment into a large cooking pot and boil it for approximately 10 minutes, then place it in the dryer at a high setting.
To make mittens, simply trace all around your hand then add wrist length. Add a half-inch to this for the seam allowance then cut and sew.
Used garments could also be purchased at a thrift store if you don’t have anything you’re ready to cut up. – Eva Krawchuk writes from Winnipeg
