Who Said Hospital Food Wasn’t Good?


813 favourite recipes from Tiger Hills Health Centre staff are contained in this community cookbook

For years the staff at Tiger Hills Health Centre in Treherne swapped recipes back and forth. They talked recipes at coffee breaks, jotted down recommended ones, posted tried and much-approved recipes on bulletin boards to share.

As 2000 approached, they got to thinking; why not put a little cookbook together? It would be the staff’s own millennium project. They’d all buy one when they were printed.

Note the word “little” here.

The cookbook the THHC ended up with contains 813 recipes. The recipes came not just from present-day staff, but all the past-serving doctors, nurses and other staff who’ve served here since the hospital began serving south-central Manitoba in 1958. Residents of the personal-care home also put in the best of their best recipes in this cookbook too.

At last count, they’ve sold anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 cookbooks, say members of the small committee that put it together. They’re still selling it. It’s the cookbook given at showers to local brides to be. Families press it into the hands of a son or daughter leaving home.

A nice pile of cash has accrued from sales over these nine years. Some went toward the purchase of a stretcher for the hospital emergency room. They’re still deciding how best to spend the rest. Proceeds from further sales of Caring and Sharing Favorite Recipes will now go to palliative care.

Tamara Greenlay, a lab and X-ray technician at THHC was among those who cooked up the cookbook idea a decade go. This turned out to be far more successful than anyone ever dreamed that day over cof-We’re always looking for favourite recipes from readers. Do you have one to share? And while everyone stirs up a recipe from it, the names above the recipes are stirring up memories of


5 c. cooked carrots, diced

3/4 c. grated cheese

1 can cream of

mushroom soup

1 small pkg.

Stove Top stuffing

1 c. chopped onion

Sauté onions, add carrots and cheese. Stir in the soup. Pour into a casserole dish. Top with stuffing mix and bake for 1/2 hour at 350F or until hot.

2-1/2 to 3 lbs.

chicken pieces

1/2 c. ketchup

1/4 c. water


1/4 c. brown sugar


1 envelope dry onion

soup mix

Arrange chicken in a casserole dish. In a small bowl, combine remaining ingredients; mix well. Spoon over chicken, ensuring all pieces have sauce on them. Bake, covered at 350F for 1 hour or until tender. Good served with rice.

Here’s a sampling of recipes from Tiger Hills Health Centre’s Caring and Sharing Favorite Recipes.


1 c. margarine


1/2 c. lightly packed

brown sugar

3 c. flour

Blend well and press into a cookie sheet. Bake at 350F for 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned.


3 c. pecan halves

3/4 c. margarine

3/4 c. brown sugar

1/2 c. liquid honey

1/4 c. whipping cream

Place pecans over crust (flat side down). In a heavy pan, melt margarine and honey. Add brown sugar and bring to a boil. Boil for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring constantly, until a rich caramel colour. Remove from heat and stir in cream. Mix well and pour over pecans. Bake 15 minutes at 350F. Cool and cut into bars. Freezes well.
