BSE test-kit firms raided in Belgium

Belgian authorities launched dawn raids Jan. 20 on several laboratories in an investigation into alleged price fixing of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) tests.

“We had some information that the prices were the same among the different laboratories, and this is the reason why we made the dawn raids,” Bert Stulens, the prosecutor general for Belgium’s Competition Council, told Reuters.

He declined to give the names of the laboratories or to say how many were being investigated.

Belgium alone conducted the raids, with no other European Union countries investigating possible BSEtesting cartels.
