Lab Breach Could Devastate U.S. Livestock Industry

The National Research Council is worried a new U.S. laboratory aimed at studying dangerous foreign animal diseases could spread highly contagious pathogens to American livestock.

The lab, planned for Manhattan, Kansas, would be the world’s third Biosafety- Level 4 Pathogen facility able to handle large animals. The others are in Australia and at the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health in Winnipeg.

Among the risks, the council said, is a nearly 70 per cent chance over 50 years that highly contagious foot-and- mouth disease could be released.
