– Weekly jobless claims jumped to a seasonally adjusted 853,000 people in the week ended Dec. 5, according to updated data from the country’s Labor Department. The number of people filing initial claims for unemployment benefits came in well above expectations, with rising COVID-19 cases in the country and increased business disruption reportedly hurting the economy.
– Daily deaths due to COVID-19 in the U.S. topped 3,000 people for the first time since the pandemic started on Wednesday, hitting 3,253 people. That was more than died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
– The acting Prime Minister of Lebanon, Hasan Diab, along with three former ministers have been charged with negligence over the Beirut port explosion that killed hundreds and injured thousands more in August.
