WINNIPEG, October 6 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets globally.

US JOBLESS CLAIMS DECLINE
US jobless claims dropped near a 43-year-low in the week ending October 1, according to data out of the country on Thursday.

Last week, claims for unemployment benefits fell 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 249,000, the American labour department said.

CANADIAN COMMERCIAL RENT INCREASES
The Commercial Rents Services Price Index increased 0.2 per cent in the second quarter, following a 0.1 per cent gain the previous quarter. Higher average rents for office and industrial buildings were offset by lower average rents for retail buildings, Statistics Canada said in a report on Thursday.

CANADIAN BUILDING PERMITS UP
Municipalities issued C$7.3 billion worth of building permits in August, up 10.4 per cent from July. This marked the second consecutive monthly increase. The gain in August was mainly attributable to higher construction intentions in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia, Statistics Canada said in a report on Thursday.
