Global markets: Trump fails to address fiscal policy

By Commodity News Service Canada

WINNIPEG, January 12 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets globally.

– The American dollar weakened on Thursday, the day after a press conference with US president-elect Donald Trump.
The conference left questions in traders’ minds, as Trump did not elaborate on his plans for infrastructure spending and policies.

– US jobless claims in the week ending January 7 increased 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 247,000, the country’s labour department said.

While the number increased, it was below analyst expectations and under 300,000, which indicates a strong labour force.

Claims have been below 300,000 for the past 97 weeks, analysts say.

– Canada’s New Housing Price Index (NHPI) rose 0.2 per cent in November compared with the previous month. The advance was largely driven by price increases for new housing in Ontario, Statistics Canada said in a report on Thursday.

Prices increased on the month, but were behind analyst expectations.

Apartment and condos prices are not included in the data.
