Global Markets: NAFTA meeting starts in Washington

WINNIPEG, April 6, 2018 (CNS) – The following is a glance
at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.
The Canadian economy added more jobs than expected in
February, driven by hiring in construction and a recovery
in full-time positions, according to data released by
Statistics Canada Friday. Canada created 32,300 jobs in
March, topping economists’ forecasts for an increase of
20,000. The unemployment rate held at 5.8 per cent, while
the participation rate was unchanged at 65.5 per cent.

Trade Agreement countries are gathering in Washington, DC
amid growing signs of optimism that they could find common
ground on the toughest issues. United States Trade
Representative Robert Lighthizer will meet with his Mexican
and Canadian counterparts Friday, the first such high-level
trilateral negotiating session since March 5. Talks have
warmed considerably, but it is still unclear how much
progress has been made.
China announced Friday it would fight back “at any
cost” with fresh measures if the U.S. continues on its path
of protectionism. This came hours after U.S. President
Donald Trump threatened to slap an additional US$100
billion in tariffs on Chinese goods.
