Canada’s finance minister Chrystia Freeland and Carla Qualtrough, minister of employment, workforce development and disability inclusion, announced an extension to the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) on Thursday. CERB was originally scheduled to expire at the end of August, but it will be extended for four more weeks before being replaced with a “more including Employment Insurance program. Three new jobless programs will also be available for Canadians who lost work during the pandemic. About three million people currently receiving CERB will transfer to the new EI program, while the remaining one million will be eligible for the new programs.

Alexei Navalny, the leader of Russia’s opposition party, has been diagnosed with a metabolic disorder following a suspected poisoning on a flight from Siberia to Moscow. His doctor reportedly said there were “some working diagnosis…the main one is a metabolic disorder,” according to reports. Navalny remains in serious condition, though doctors said he improved overnight.
South Korea has reported 324 new cases of COVID-19, which is the highest single-day total since March. Many cases have been traced to activity at churches. Poland, Slovakia, Spain and France are also reporting significantly rising cases as many people return from traveling abroad before school starts.
