WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Retail sales in Canada rebounded in June, according to a report from Statistics Canada released on Friday. Receipts dropped 2.1 per cent in May due to COVID-19 shutdowns, but sales rose by an estimated 4.4 per cent as restrictions to combat the coronavirus were eased. Also for June, the federal agency reported 230,700 new jobs were created.

– After a year-long delay, the 2020 Summer Olympic Games officially opened in Tokyo on Friday with a muted opening ceremony devoid of spectators. Delegations walked into the stadium, many with only a fraction of their athletes on hand and most of them masked, as the shadow of COVID-19 lingered as numerous athletes and other personnel have been infected. Protests against the Games, which have been deeply unpopular in Japan, took place outside Olympic Stadium. Athletic competition began on Wednesday.
