Global markets: Canadian GDP up in January

WINNIPEG, March 31 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets globally.

– Canada’s gross domestic product grew 0.6 per cent in January on the strength of widespread growth across both goods- and service-producing industries. With the exception of October, gross domestic product has risen every month since June 2016, Statistics Canada said in a report on Friday.

– Average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees in Canada were C$967 in January, little changed from December and up 1.8 per cent from January 2016, Statistics Canada said on Friday.

– US consumer spending held mostly steady in February, according to reports out of the country.

US consumer spending increased by 0.1 per cent in February.
