Pushing pulses as an environmental solution can be risky

Lentil prices in Western Canada have seen a sharp decline over the past month, but weather events could provide a bit of a boost.

Lentil prices on the Canadian Prairies eased back during the week ended July 28, said Levon Sargsyan, broker with Johnston’s Grain. Sargsyan noted that’s due to the recent rains that brought relief to some of the dry areas of the region.

As pulse crops across the country continue to develop, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada updated its estimates for dry peas and lentils. AAFC issued its July supply and demand report on July 21.

Canadian pea exports were up in April, with China the largest destination despite new trade barriers, according to the latest Statistics Canada data.

Dry beans and field peas are in good shape so far in 2025, said Daryl Domitruk, executive director for Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers.
