Jesus Christ was innocent, but was charged, convicted and sentenced to death on a cross. He took the punishment for our sins and paid the price so that we can be reconciled with God. After three days in the grave He arose and is in heaven to be our mediator.

The elderly farmer is watching a show where they are restoring old tractors. His eyes have a spark and I can see the love for farming on his face. A number of years ago he moved off the farm but was still able to put in a full day’s work. Now he is housebound, has lost most of his strength and is not able to do the physical work anymore.

I came from the city when I married this farmer and knew absolutely nothing about farming. I learned a lot the three years I lived on the farm, but did not feel that love for the land as my husband did. It was for each of us a second marriage (our first spouses passed away) and even though we were not compatible in many areas our love succeeded, because we knew God and tried to live by His teachings. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 4:26 “not to let the sun go down on your anger.” Do not ever go to sleep angry.

This Valentine’s Day let us show in an extraordinary way our love for the special person in our life.

The soldiers who left home to fight in a wartorn country?

The soldiers who came back from war, their bodies and minds torn to pieces?

When the doorbell rang and a messenger brought a message of death?

This Remembrance Day we need to remember, and never forget, what our fathers, grandfathers and forefathers did for the freedom of others.

There are still soldiers fighting in different parts of the world. We need to pray that they will know Who brought the ultimate sacrifice, so they can be free from the oppression of sin and be assured of the mansion that is waiting them in heaven (John 14:3), no matter what happens in this world. Our prayers can travel where no words can reach.

Let’s not forget to remember them.

It is cloudy today and maybe we will get some rain. The farmers do not want any rain right now while they are trying to get the crop into the bins. For some it is a bountiful harvest, others are moaning and groaning about the water — the small quantity, and some lesser quality of the grain. My husband always says that after 63 years of farming he has never gone hungry yet, even when there were years of crop failures.

There are still so many things that we can be thankful for. We have a roof over our head, many of us have loving families and we know that the Lord is in control if we let Him into our life.

When we read the Psalms we can see how thankful David is time and again, because he knows who is in control of his life. Psalm 95:2,3 tell us, “Let us come before Him with thanksgiving… for the Lord is a great God…”

Let us be thankful even for the small blessings we received this past year.

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

The three mothers are sitting together on the couch. Great-grandma was expecting her first child when she emigrated more than 50 years ago. It was not planned that way, but what a blessing this daughter has been. Now that I am getting older I can count on her for help if I need it. Grandma tried for several years to get pregnant, had a few miscarriages, then this beautiful girl arrived. She grew up, got married and now she has a precious little boy.

It is wonderful to see how the generations keep growing. When God created male and female He told them “Be fruitful and increase in number…” (Genesis 1:28).

Let us remember the great-grandmas who brought their children into the world and often after a very busy and fruitful life now live in obscurity, alone and sometimes forgotten.

Mothers need to be recognized. They so often work beyond any time of day and night. Make their day special for them.

Some of the grandchildren have brand new babies. They need the support from their mothers and sometimes grandmothers. Let us not break the cycle.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers.

The eyes of the veterans show grief and some openly weep when they are reminded of the war they fought in. They lost comrades and close friends. Many were hurt and some continue to suffer because of it. Today, soldiers still come home aching in body, mind and spirit. Some come home in coffins. The soldiers fought for the freedom of others and many gave their life.

Christ gave His life for us so that we could have freedom from sin. John 8:36 says: If therefore the Son ( Jesus) shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. We can claim this promise.

July 1 is marked on my calendar as a special day. It has been many years since I became a Canadian citizen. I studied the book, memorized the anthem and stood proudly in front of the officials pledging my allegiance to the Queen. To be a Canadian citizen brought along privileges, responsibilities and obligations. I was now allowed to vote, was responsible for my duties as a taxpayer and had the obligation to obey the laws of the land, Canada. Each year on Canada Day we celebrate the opportunities Canada has to offer.

When I wanted to become a citizen of God’s Kingdom, I studied the Book, the Holy Bible. I memorized many verses, and I now accept the fact that the door to my Heavenly Home will be open when God calls me home. My responsibility is to live according to His will that I am obligated to seek each day.

Some of the stems of the little plants looked hairy when I brought several pots up from the basement. It is called a resurrection plant and was given to me several years ago by a friend. She also gave me some instructions on how to look after the plants after enjoying the flowers. In fall quit watering and let the plants die back. Cut off at ground level and put away. In spring start watering and they will come up again. They like sunlight. I just brought up the plants and watered them so they will come back to life again.

On Good Friday we remember that Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross as a worst criminal, even though He was innocent. In the Old Testament the blood of a perfect lamb, without any blemish, was used once a year for the cleansing of the sins of the people. In the New Testament Jesus became the perfect sacrifice, because He was without sin, and did it once and for all.

But Christ did not stay on the cross. At Easter He arose from the dead and He is alive. Let’s celebrate a risen Saviour this week. Have a Happy Easter.

When I think of valentines the colour red comes to mind. The card is usually inside a red envelope and inside the card there may be red printing or a red heart. It gives a shy person an opportunity to express the love that is in his or her heart.

Then there is the box of chocolates and the flowers. The candy box has to be red, because red represents love and red roses are a favourite.

The colour red in the Bible represents the blood of Christ, shed for us to show His love. In John 3:16 we can read how God loved the world so much that He gave up His only son for us.

Let’s show our love this Valentine’s Day by doing something special for someone else.

This year we will again remember the soldiers who gave their lives so others can have peace. We also think of the veterans who fought in different wars to free the people of the oppression of the enemy. Many came home scarred for life with memories that never faded. I think of some of the memories that I still live with and I was only a child during the Second World War. I still listen to the hum of an airplane flying over and the sound of a siren rekindles my fear. Let’s remember all the children who are experiencing the effects of war today. Their happiness in life could be scarred forever.

The families of the soldiers are also affected by the war and they need our prayers. Let’s pray that God will comfort them and carry them through these troubled times. God who “heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3) can give peace from the trauma and bloodshed of warfare.
