Chicago | Reuters—Chicago Mercantile Exchange feeder and live cattle futures turned higher on Thursday, as technical trading, a steady cash market and weakness in grain futures gave cattle contracts a boost, traders said.

Meanwhile, hog futures continued to turn lower on profit-taking two days after the most-active December contract reached its highest since June 3, and as traders squared positions ahead of a key government report.

CME December lean hog futures settled down 0.975 cent at 73.925 cents per pound and February hogs ended down 0.800 cent at 77.825 cents.

CME most-active December live cattle settled up 0.500 cent at 184.825 cents per pound and the spot October contract ended up 1.050 cents at 184.100 cents.

But continued weakness in wholesale beef prices capped gains. The U.S. Department of Agriculture priced choice cuts of boxed beef on Thursday morning at US$296.64 per hundredweight (cwt), down $1.53 from Wednesday. Select cuts fell by 35 cents at $282.93 per cwt.

The USDA reported Thursday’s cattle slaughter at 124,000 head, up from 122,000 head a week earlier.

Feeder cattle futures ended higher with the November contract finishing up 0.925 cent at 244.975 cents per pound.

After the market closed Thursday, USDA said in its quarterly hogs and pigs report that the U.S. hog herd as of September 1 was 76.5 million head, up slightly from a year earlier and up almost 2 per cent from June 1.

The report showed the number of hogs kept for breeding was close to trade expectations, and the number of pigs per litter continued to grow.

Ahead of Thursday’s quarterly hog report, analysts surveyed by Reuters on average expected the government to report the U.S. hog herd as of Sept. 1 at 76.285 million head, up 0.2 per cent from a year earlier. The number of hogs kept for breeding was seen down 2.1 per cent year-on-year.

Chicago | Reuters—Mercantile Exchange live cattle futures ended mostly lower on Wednesday, consolidating a day after the benchmark December contract LCZ25 set a near two-month high.

CME most-active December live cattle LCZ24 settled down 0.075 cent at 184.325 cents per pound and the spot October contract LCV24 ended down 0.150 cent at 183.050 cents. Feeder cattle futures ended higher with the November contract FCX24 finishing up 0.650 cent at 244.050 cents per pound.

A dip in wholesale beef prices added pressure. The U.S. Department of Agriculture priced choice cuts of boxed beef on Wednesday afternoon at $298.17 per hundredweight (cwt), down a steep $3.72 from Tuesday and the lowest reading since May 10. Select cuts fell by $3.59 at $283.28 per cwt.

The USDA reported Wednesday’s cattle slaughter at 120,000 head and the week-to-date kill at 363,000 head, down about four per cent from a year ago.

A softer close on Wall Street equity markets added to bearish sentiment, dimming optimism about consumer demand for pricey cuts of beef. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 backed down from record highs as investors awaited signals on upcoming interest rate cuts.

Hog futures inched lower on profit-taking a day after the most-active December contract LHZ24 reached its highest since June 3, and as traders squared positions ahead of Thursday’s quarterly USDA Hogs and Pigs report.

CME December lean hog futures LHZ24 settled down 0.075 cent at 74.900 cents per pound and February hogs LHG25 ended down 0.075 cent at 78.625 cents.

The USDA priced pork carcasses at $94.10 per cwt, down 14 cents from Tuesday.

Ahead of Thursday’s quarterly hog report, analysts surveyed by Reuters on average expect the government to report the U.S. hog herd as of Sept. 1 at 76.285 million head, up 0.2% from a year earlier. The number of hogs kept for breeding was seen down 2.1 per cent year-on-year.

Meanwhile, agriculture organizations urged the White House to take action to avert a potential Oct. 1 strike at U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports that handle roughly half of the country’s ocean trade, including consumer staples like coffee, meat and eggs.

Chicago | Reuters—Benchmark December live cattle futures LCZ24 on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange climbed to their highest in nearly two months on Tuesday, supported by technical buying and a rosy outlook for beef demand tied to strength in Wall Street equity markets, analysts said.

CME most-active December live cattle LCZ24 settled up 0.575 cent at 184.400 cents per pound after reaching 184.925 cents, the contract’s highest since Aug. 1. The spot October contract ended down 0.050 cent at 183.200 cents.

CME November feeder cattle futures FCV24 rose 0.650 cent to settle at 243.400 cents per pound.

Live cattle futures have climbed since the U.S. Federal Reserve’s large half-point rate cut last week, and the S&P 500 and Dow ended at record highs on Tuesday despite an unexpected decline in U.S. consumer confidence in September.

“All the big worries about the economy seem to have faded into the background for the time being. That makes us feel good about domestic (beef) demand,” said Ted Seifried, chief market strategist for the Zaner Group.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture priced choice cuts of boxed beef on Tuesday afternoon at $301.89 per hundredweight (cwt), up 8 cents from Monday, while select cuts fell to $286.87 per cwt, down 92 cents.

Hog futures closed mostly higher as well. The benchmark CME December futures LHZ24 settled up 0.100 cent at 74.975 cents per pound after reaching 75.800 cents, the contract’s highest since June 3.

Traders await the USDA’s quarterly Hogs and Pigs report on Thursday. Analysts surveyed by Reuters on average expect the government to report the U.S. hog herd as of Sept. 1 at 76.285 million head, up 0.2 per cent from a year earlier, while the number of hogs kept for breeding was seen down 2.1 per cent year-on-year.

Chicago | Reuters—Chicago Mercantile Exchange live cattle and feeder cattle futures jumped on Thursday as traders adjusted positions ahead of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s monthly cattle on feed report and saw strong U.S. export demand, according to analysts.

October live cattle LCV24 settled up 1.675 cents at 179.975 cents per pound and reached the contract’s highest price since Aug. 16. October feeder cattle futures FCV24 ended up 3.825 cents at 243.775 cents per pound and reached its highest price since Aug. 2.

Analysts expect USDA’s report will show there were 0.9% more cattle in U.S. feedlots on Sept. 1 than a year earlier, according to a Reuters poll. Analysts expected August cattle placements to be down 1% last year, and marketings in August to be 3.4 per cent below last year.

Karl Setzer, partner at Consus Ag Consulting, said it was also a good week for U.S. beef export sales, which rose 36% per cent in the week ended Sept 12. from the previous week.

“And then you throw in the cheaper feed grains and that’s given cattle even more support,” Setzer said.

Chicago Board of Trade corn and soybean futures both ended down on Thursday.

The dollar extended declines after the Federal Reserve cut rates by half of a percentage point, making U.S. farm products more attractive to importers. U.S. stocks shot higher, also supporting cattle futures on Thursday, traders said.

Choice boxed beef prices fell by 1.82 cents to $299.56 per hundredweight and select cuts of boxed beef fell by 1.49 cents to $288.26 per hundredweight, according to USDA data on Thursday.

CME October lean hog futures LHV24 ended up 0.2 cent at 82.25 cents per pound.

Chicago | Reuters—Chicago Mercantile Exchange lean hog futures ticked up on Wednesday as pork cutout values remained strong and a weaker dollar made U.S. exports more competitive, traders said.

October hog futures LHV24 settled up 0.275 cents at 82.05 cents per pound.

Pork carcass values increased by $1.08 to $96.08 per hundredweight, and other cutouts increased except for bellies, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data published on Wednesday morning.

Live and feeder cattle futures fell slightly while traders adjusted positions ahead of Friday’s monthly USDA Cattle on Feed report. Analysts expect the report will show there were 0.9 per cent more cattle in U.S. feedlots on Sept. 1 than a year earlier, according to a Reuters poll.

“It’ll stick around with some more choppy trade until we get to end of the week and there’s something new to react to,” Matthew Wiegand, broker at FuturesOne, said.

The dollar extended declines after the Federal Reserve cut rates by half of a percentage point. U.S. stocks briefly shot higher, which if continued could support cattle futures on Thursday, traders said.

Wholesale U.S. boxed beef prices have trended downward over the past week, suggesting consumer demand may be weak, traders said.

Choice boxed beef prices slid by 36 cents to $303.55 per hundredweight and select cuts of boxed beef fell by 61 cents to $291.61 per hundredweight, according to USDA data on Wednesday morning.

CME October live cattle futures LCV24 ended down 0.5 cent at 178.30 cents per pound. October feeder cattle FCV24 ended down 0.8 cent at 239.95 cents per pound.

Chicago | Reuters—Chicago Mercantile Exchange live cattle and feeder cattle futures edged up on Tuesday on stock market gains and strong economic data, traders said.

Positive economic data often boosts cattle futures as consumers are more likely to opt for beef, which is pricier than other meats, when the economy is doing well.

U.S. retail sales rose in August and production at factories rebounded, suggesting the economy remained on a solid footing through much of the third quarter.

“The cattle market has been following equities more than anything else,” Altin Kalo, economist at Steiner Group, said. “The economy is seeming more resilient.”

However, wholesale U.S. boxed beef prices have trended downward over the past week, suggesting consumer demand may still be weak, traders said.

Choice boxed beef prices slid by 89 cents to $303.68 per hundredweight and select cuts of boxed beef rose by 35 cents to $292.49 per hundredweight, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data published on Tuesday morning.

CME October live cattle futures LCV24 ended up 1.575 cent at 178.80 cents per pound. October feeder cattle FCV24 ended up 1.75 cent at 240.75 cents per pound.

On Friday, analysts expect monthly U.S. Department of Agriculture data will show there were 0.9 per cent more cattle in U.S. feedlots on Sept. 1 than a year earlier, according to a Reuters poll. As of Aug. 1, there were 11.1 million cattle on feed, up 0.3 per cent from a year ago, the USDA said.

Hog futures strengthened on a spate of short covering triggered by relatively strong pork cutout values and signs that pork demand remains strong, traders said.

October hog futures LHV24 settled up 1.85 cents at 81.775 cents per pound.
