U. S. egg sets down

U. S. commercial hatcheries in the 19-state weekly program set 201 million eggs in incubators during the week ending Nov. 15, down seven per cent from the corresponding week a year earlier, the U. S. Agriculture Department said on Nov. 19.

Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 83 per cent.

Broiler growers in the 19-state weekly program placed 156 million chicks for meat production during the week, down four per cent from the comparable week a year earlier.

Cumulative placements from Dec. 30, 2007, through Nov. 15, 2008, were 7.98 billion, down one per cent from the same period a year earlier.
