Sheep & Goat Sales – for Feb. 26, 2009

There was a small selection of all varieties of sheep and goats at the Feb. 19, 2009 sheep and goat sale at Winnipeg Livestock Auction.

In the sheep class two large Romney x ewes (185 pounds); brought $101.75 ($0.55/lb). A Dorper x ewe (165 pounds); brought $127.88 ($0.7750/ lb). All attention followed as a 280-pound Cheviot x ram walked into the arena. This ram brought $117.60.

Ewes traded in a range of $83.20 to $127.80.

The selection of goats provided some good Boer x bucks for breeding purposes. The heavier bucks 115 pounds and 160 pounds, brought $1.35/lb and $1.13/lb; respectfully. The lightweight Boer x bucks, 65 and 80 pounds, brought $1.29/ lb and $1.25/lb; respectfully.

The does remained at a steady price rate, from before Christmas, low compared to the other classes of goats. The does remained $0.80/lb to $0.82/lb range. Although, a younger group of Boer x does, brought $1.14/lb.

A group of Boer x mixed kids (65 pounds), created some interesting bidding. These kids brought $1.29/lb; ($84 each).

Once again, the audience was entertained by the presence of a pygmy x buck. This impressive buck, held its own in the arena by deliver ing $1.25/pound.

Jan. 22, 2009 was the first auction of the year for selling sheep and goats at the Winnipeg Auction. The weather became more acceptable and not the extreme cold temperatures, as the province had been receiving. The number of animals was low for this sale day.

The younger ewes brought the top bids, ($0.6750/lb) for the day. Possibly, purchased for increasing a future herd.

Ewes traded in a range of $52.25 to $115.43.

The goat supply was very limited, for this sale. A couple Saanen x bucks of average weight 150 and 135 pounds, brought $0.93/lb. There appeared to be limited bidding on these available goats. Three Angora goats were averaging 97 pounds, represented some variety in the arena, selling for $40 each.

The next sheep and goat sale was February 5, 2009; at the Winnipeg Auction, more animals were sold (almost twice as many). The weather produced milder temperatures, allowing for better travelling conditions.

The rams sold had generally heavy structured frames, very impressive animals in the arena. Two Suffolk x rams were the gentle giants of the day, weighing at 300 and 260 pounds. These rams brought $0.40 and $0.45 per pound, respectively.

The bidding on the heavy lambs started low, but improved as the auct ion continued.

Every effort was required to produce acceptable prices.

Only a few goats were sold on this day. A Boer x buck, 85 pounds brought $90.00 ($1.06/lb). While an Alpine x doe was far lower than average sel ling price. The younger Boer x kids were not producing the desired or acceptable price for the producer; these goats were passed.

1.63 1.46 2009. From all calculations, the slaughter kids sold $5 $7 lower, compared to the past week. Kids at the weight 30 40 pounds, were sold for $48 $52 and the 40-to 50-pound animal, sold for $52 $65. On February 10, 2009; 976 goats were sold in New Holland, Pa. Reports indicated the slaughter kids were selling on an uneven steady rate. The 40-to 50-pound goat, brought $42 $60 and the 50-to 60-pound kid, averaged $60 $78.

The February 1 3 ,2009 Weekly Market Review stated the market lambs; 95 115 pounds in Ontario; sold for $1.60 $1.42/lb. The feeder lambs, 61 80 pounds; brought $2.94 $2.87/lb. The market lambs; 95 115 pound in Alber ta sold for $1.29 $1.08.
