An all-party panel discussion on the fed-era l government’s plans to shut down the national prison farm program is now planned for Feb. 1 in Steinbach.
The event was formerly planned to be held in former public safety minister Peter Van Loan’s riding, but last week’s cabinet shuffle appointing Manitoba MP Vic Toews to the position prompted the change. The live online debate has confirmed attendance from Manitoba NDP MP Niki Ashton, Liberal MP Wayne Easter, Ontario Liberal MP Mark Holland, Kate Storey of the Green Party of Manitoba. However, Vic Toews has not yet said he will be there.
The event is billed as an all-party panel discussion on the planned closure, the value of, and ideas for revitalization of the national prison farm program. Manitoba’s Rockwood Institution prison farm, in Stony Mountain, is in serious jeopardy, as are all of the six prison farms across Canada, the John Howard Society of Manitoba says in a release.
