Manitoba breeders have a new breed to show locally.
The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba’s Ag Ex is already one of the biggest stops for Manitoba cattle breeders, with at least one breed usually crowning its national champion every year in Brandon.
This is the first year, however, that Speckled Park has been in the mix. The moderately framed breed is instantly recognizable by its multicoloured, speckled coat and is often touted for its thrifty feed needs, well-marbled meat and low fat.
For Darla Sauter of Second Chance Speckle Parks, it’s the difference between driving to the other side of her province, and an easy jaunt from her home in Fairlight, Sask, to Brandon, Man.
Most Speckle Park breeders are still in northeastern Saskatchewan, close to where the breed originated, she said, although herds have since spread to south eastern Saskatchewan and Manitoba in recent years.
The Canadian Speckle Park Association currently lists four breeders in Manitoba.
