May was another busy month for our 4-H club, with fundraisers and group meetings. The date of our achievement show and sale day will be June 27. Everyone is welcome; the show will start at 1 p. m. and the sale at 7 p. m. at the Kemnay Community Centre. We have a meeting, another fundraiser and a workshop day still ahead before achievement day. After achievement day we will have one final get-together and windup day. Then we will take the summer off to prepare for the start of another exciting year in the fall. – Tonja Bokkel

The club had its monthly meeting April 13 at the Gainsborough hall at 7 p. m. Our Co-op parking lot cleanup this year was a success; it took place at the Co-op Marketplace in Portage. Our achievement day will be on June 20. Everyone is welcome, of course! And lastly, our Portage Fair will be on July 9-11. – Lindsay Verwey

The club held its achievement night on April 27. Nine of 10 club members achieved in projects such as Getting a Jump on Life, Woodworking, Foods and Outdoor Living. Throughout the year, club members helped with a variety of community events, such as the Starbuck fall supper, the fall fair in Sanford and a hot dog sale at Enns Bros. The club also hosted a bingo night fundraiser during the winter, with proceeds going to the Starbuck Hall in lieu of rent. The executive was made up of Jake Jowett-Stark (president), Taylor Livingston (vice-president), Ashley Ammeter (treasurer), Stephanie Ammeter (secretary), and Hannah Shirtliff (club reporter). Sharon Masse was the head leader. One of the club members, Trevor Jowett-Stark, will travel to Japan this summer as part of a 4-H exchange program. – Hannah Shirtliff

The Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup will be held July 30 to Aug. 1 at the fairgrounds in Neepawa. A group of breeders from Manitoba is pleased to offer the third annual event for youth up to 25 years of age and bring together junior members, 4-H’ers and enthusiasts from across the province.

Events include team grooming, individual and team judging, showmanship, marketing, sales talk, art, photography, scrapbooking, as well as cattle classes.

This initiative is being undertaken as an all-breeds show to bring commercial and purebred young breeders from across the province to see friendly competition among new and upcoming breeders from within Manitoba. Everyone is welcome to attend.

New this year: the Youth Beef Roundup will select its own team for Canadian Western Agribition judging competition in November.
