As the fall run continued across Manitoba, prices for feeder cattle remained relatively steady at the Ashern Auction Mart. Those for slaughter cattle eased back a little, according to manager Kirk Kiesman.
“It’s been steady now for three weeks. It definitely hasn’t gone up. Plainer cattle have actually gone down,” he said.

At eight auctions in Manitoba, heavy feeder steers during the week ended Oct. 6 brought in $223-$248 per hundredweight. For the week ended Oct. 13, there were small adjustments as those cattle garnered $227-$250/cwt. Light feeder steers pulled in $266-$308/cwt., then edged up to $274-$323.
Heavy feeder heifers in the week ended Oct. 6 earned $201-$219/cwt. slipping to $196-$217 during the week ended Oct. 13. Light feeder heifers went for $222-$251 and then averaged $233-$249/cwt.
As for slaughter cattle, Kiesman said they went up in price about three weeks ago, gaining about seven cents per pound. Then they pulled back by about two to three cents/lb.
At Ashern on Oct. 12, D1-D2 slaughter cattle were $94-$104/cwt., down a little from $103-$112/cwt. at the Oct. 5 sale. Mature brought in $121-$147.50/cwt. on Oct. 12, shifting slightly from $125-$147.75/cwt. on Oct. 5. Heiferettes fetched $129-$140 and $110-$157.

Manitoba’s fall run continued, seeing a 46 per cent uptick in the number of cattle coming to auction. There was a total of 10,539 head sold during the week ended Oct. 13. The greatest increase was at Heartland Livestock Services’ Virden facility, going from 1,288 cattle on Oct. 5 to 2,611 on Oct. 12.
The Ste. Rose Auction Mart saw its numbers almost double from week to week, jumping from 688 on Oct. 6 to 1,345 on Oct. 13. The Gladstone Auction Mart was the only sale to see its intake dip, from 1,019 on Oct. 4 to 816 on Oct. 11.
