U.S. Cash Grains-Corn bids steady to firm; light sales

April 17 (Reuters) - Corn spot basis bids were steady to
higher on Thursday around the U.S. Midwest in an effort to
entice farmers to sell the remaining amounts of old-crop corn,
grain merchants said.
    * Corn basis bids firmed by 2 to 3 cents per bushel at
processors in the Western Corn Belt and corn bids firmed by 1 to
2 cents at ethanol plants in the Eastern Corn Belt.
    * Corn bids also firmed by 3 to 4 cents per bushel at
terminals on the Mississippi River.
    * Farmers have sold light amount of crops as corn prices

hovered near $5 per bushel and soybean prices hovered near $15 per bushel, dealers said. * Soybean basis bids were mostly steady at elevators and processors around the region, but increased by 1 to 5 cents per bushel at river terminals. * Some processors and elevators will be closed for Good Friday. Some will accept crop deliveries, but will not be available to book sales, dealers said. * Wet and frozen ground conditions have kept farmers out of the field, but with forecasts for warmer temperatures in the Western Corn Belt next week farmers may be able to resume planting activities, grain merchants said.
