Returns paid to Western Canada’s commercial fishers in 2009-10 totalled $30.9 million, down from $33 million in 2008-09, according to the Winnipegbased Freshwater Fish Marketing Corp.
Freshwater Fish noted in a release Nov. 26 that this year’s returns on marketings include a final payment of $1.3 million, compared to no final payment at all last year, indicating a “positive turn” in 2009-10.
“The strong Canadian dollar has definitely had an impact on our returns this year,” Freshwater Fish CEO John Wood said. “But we have been able to increase U.S. prices on some products to all-time highs, which has helped offset the exchange impact.”
Total deliveries remained high this year at 16.3 million kg, down about two per cent from 16.6 million last year, the Crown-owned marketing and processing corporation said.
“Consistent lake whitefish deliveries have allowed us to really develop and secure the Russian market,” Wood said. “Our marketing team is working to keep the Russian market strong and expand it as possible.”
