Northern Auction Yards Moving More Cattle

Ca t t l e marketings in Manitoba during the week ended Nov. 27 were fairly brisk at auction yards further north. Marketings in the south of the province were seen as average to just slightly above average.

“Numbers of cattle hitting the auction yards in the more northerly areas of the province were considerably higher than what has been seen over the past few weeks,” said Rick Wright, a cattle buyer for Cattlex Ltd. “We’ve actually seen some good numbers at those locations over the past two weeks now.”

Increased marketings were related to producers having finally caught up on fall field work. The calendar was also prompting movement, Wright noted. “With Dec. 1 just around the corner, it’s time to get the cattle in and sold.”

Prices for cattle have been holding steady at some fairly decent levels, Wright said, with yearlings in particular showing some strength. The calf market was seen as fully steady; the butcher cattle market, he described as depressed.

Demand for cattle being put on auction also was fairly steady, although interest from Ontario outlets has picked up, he said.

“I think what the Ontario interest is all about has to do more with the fact their corn crop came in as feed, rather than food quality,” Wright said.
