Global markets: US jobless claims fall

By Commodity News Service Canada

WINNIPEG, April 6 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets globally.

– US jobless claims in the week ending April 1 fell 25,000 to a seasonally adjusted 234,000—the biggest drop in two years, the country’s labour department said.

Claims have been below 300,000 for 109 consecutive weeks.

– Canadian municipalities issued C$7.5 billion worth of building permits in February, down 2.5 per cent from January. Ontario and Alberta led the five provinces that reported declines in February. The national decrease was mainly the result of lower construction intentions for single-family dwellings and institutional structures, Statistics Canada said in a report on Thursday.

– The Commercial Rents Services Price Index increased 0.6 per cent in the fourth quarter, following a 0.3 per cent gain the previous quarter. The increase was mainly attributable to higher average rents for retail buildings, StatsCan said.
