Global markets: US homebuilding falls to fresh lows

WINNIPEG, June 16 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets globally.

– US homebuilding was at an eight-month-low in May, according to reports on Friday.

Homebuilding dropped for three consecutive months into May.

– Foreign investment in Canadian securities totalled C$10.6 billion in April, mainly acquisitions of government debt instruments. At the same time, Canadian investors reduced their holdings of foreign securities by C$9.9 billion, the largest divestment since January 2016, Statistics Canada said in a report on Friday.

As a result, Canada’s international transactions in securities generated a net inflow of funds into the Canadian economy of C$20.5 billion in April.

– Monthly data from the large retailers program are now available for April, Statistics Canada said in a report on Friday.
