– El Salvador has become the first country in the world to adopt bitcoin as legal tender. President Nayib Bukele pushed for the adoption of the cryptocurrency, claiming it will help the country save US$400 million a year while also providing access to financial services to people with no bank account. Critics claim the move may fuel money laundering in the Central American country.
– Shadow government opponents of the military rulers in Myanmar are calling for a nationwide uprising against the junta. The military staged a coup on Feb. 1 2021, toppling the elected government. After months of fighting between the military and smaller armed ethnic groups and militias, the National Unity Government is calling for a coordinated “peoples defensive war.”
