“Beer chill factor” research enters second round

Prairie beer drinkers are being asked to submit research proposals aimed at achieving the optimum outdoor beer chill.

Saskatoon-based Great Western Brewing will accept proposals until March 14 for research on how to safely chill beers outside during house parties when refrigerator space is at a premium, “maximizing chill while minimizing freezing.”

The company first called for its customers to submit proposals in January last year. The top 2008 study, submitted by Greg Longman of Regina, used digital thermometers and probes in bottles of the company’s various beers arranged in a case to learn how long it would take for the beers to freeze outdoors.

“Factors such as cans versus bottles, in the pack or directly in the snow, number of beers, starting temperature, wind chill, and how thirsty the scientist, all can affect the Beer Chill Factor,” the company said in a release Friday.

“Necessity breeds ingenuity — and making sure you don’t freeze one of your Great Western beers is one such necessity,” CEO Ron Waldman said in the company’s release.

Great Western, a regional brewery selling primarily into the Prairie market, began operating in 1989 when an employee group bought Saskatoon’s former O’Keefe Brewing plant, which was slated to close after the merger of Carling O’Keefe into Molson.
