Riding Mountain National Park (RMNP) will once again host Clear Lake Celebration Day, July 23. Clear Lake’s cool, clear aqua-coloured waters have provided countless hours of recreation and fun for families visiting from near and far. With all the special memories that have been created here it is no wonder it is considered the jewel of the Prairies.
Clear Lake Celebration Day is one of the many special events taking place across the country this year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Parks Canada, the world’s first national park service.
The fun will spotlight water-related activities and beach-time fun beginning with a sand-castle- building contest sponsored by Friends of RMNP, and a free yoga class on the lawn beside the beach.
The day will also feature First Nation storytelling, a marine knot-tying demonstration, the Rolling River Fire Olympics, a wakeboarding demonstration, to “dock talks” from the researchers studying Clear Lake.
The Martese will embark on its regularly scheduled cruises at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 9 p.m., and the dinner cruise at 5:45 p.m. Call 848-1770 for rate information or to reserve a spot on the dinner cruise.
TAKE A LOOK
There is even a historical bathing suit contest with bathing costumes supplied by the Banff Upper Hot Springs Resort. Beach-goers are invited to have their photos taken wearing retro-inspired bathing suits.
Staff from agencies like the Office of Boating Safety, the Lake Friendly Initiative and Water Stewardship will be on hand to share the latest information and answer questions. The Aquatic Invasive Species booth is always popular with its table full of creepy crawly critters to pick up and examine. It’s definitely an eye-opening experience when these folks show up!
Kids big and small are welcome to bring along their favourite water-flinging devices for the Great Canadian Water Fight at 4 p.m.
The evening will come to a close with a campfire on the beach featuring a live performance of selections from Songs of Riding Mountain, the CD produced for RMNP with songs inspired by the park and its wildlife.
