Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP) in conjunction with Acklands-Grainger and major safety manufacturers will showcase the latest in farm safety at Farm Safety Expos to be held February 14 to 17 in rural Manitoba.

In addition to general safety protection, the trade shows will feature special products and safety specialists in welding safety, respiratory safety, gas detection, spill control, hearing safety, fall protection, confined space safety, safety signs, eye safety and hand protection.

“We all have to assess safety on our farms and prevent incidents from occurring for the health and safety of everyone living and working with us,” said Rob Brunel, KAP president. “We’re pleased Acklands- Grainger and other safety providers have partnered with us to help improve the safety statistics for agriculture.”

“We’re proud to be part of this initiative to help reduce the number of workplace incidents that unfortunately do occur on farms across Manitoba,” said James Benic, Acklands-Grainger regional director.

Other industry safety providers at the Farm Safety Expos will include representatives from 3M, Accuform Signs, Air Systems International, Brady, Capital Safety, Ergodyne, Haws, Industrial Scientific, Justrite, MSA-the safety company, North by Honeywell, Pacesetter, Reelcraft, Safety Ser vi ces Mani toba, and Sperian.

Farmers will have excellent resources at the trade shows to help make their farms safer this season and into the future.

“We know that WCB claims lead to higher WCB premiums and higher operating costs, so these expos can help farmers prevent incidents from occurring and control their WCB premiums at the same time,” said Doug Chorney, KAP vice-president and workplace and employment committee chair.

The expos are free to all farmers and farm employees. KAP encourages farmers to attend to learn more about farm safety and see the latest products and specials that will be available.

The expos will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the following locations:

Winkler, Feb. 14 at the Heartland Inn;

Steinbach, Feb. 15 at the Brass Lantern;

Selkirk, Feb. 16 at the Recreation Centre;

Brandon, Feb. 17 at the Keystone Centre (Pioneer Lounge).

Keys tone Agr icul tural Producers (KAP) in conjunction with Manitoba Labour and Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives will be rolling out a farm safety program called Manitoba’s Safe Farms Check Program to help make Manitoba farms safer workplaces – potentially resulting in lower workers’ compensation premiums.

The program will be made available to all Manitoba farms starting December 2010. Farmers will be able to attend regional farm safety meetings at no cost.

The meetings will provide an overview of a practical safety manual on how to make the farm safer for the farm family, farm employees, farm service personnel and other visitors. This hands-on manual was tested by over 30 Manitoba farms with modifications and changes based on feedback received.

Following the regional safety meetings in December and January, KAP and Acklands- Grainger will invite farmers to attend regional farm safety expos. The expos will be held in February and will feature short safety seminars and a farm safety trade show provided by safety suppliers. Preferred pricing for many safety products will be made available to farmers.

“All other sectors have safety programs in place, and as farmers we must also ensure our sector provides a safe working environment,” said Rob Brunel, KAP president.

“It is estimated that in the next three to five years there will be a substantial increase in farm employees and it will be important to provide a safe workplace for these new employees,” said Doug Chorney, KAP vice-president and executive board member on the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council.

“This program will help attract potential employees to consider farm-based employment, it will help increase retention of existing employees and it will also result in less operating costs due to lower workplace claims and the resulting WCB premiums.”

Manitoba Labour and Immigration has scheduled the regional safety meetings on Manitoba’s Safe Farms Check Program. The meetings have been scheduled for December 14 in Winkler, December 15 in Steinbach, January 11 in Brandon, and January 14 in Teulon.

Farmers can register for the regional safety meetings or the Safe Farms Check Program by calling 1-866-888-8186, ext. 2315. More information is also available at www.safemanitoba.com.
